Additional Screen Printing Charges

Set Up

For any screen printing job there is a fixed amount of set up labor and materials that is independent of the size of the run. For example a three color 10,000 piece order is the same amount of screens and set up labor as a three color 6 piece order. Therefore, the set up charges are the same. Generally speaking these charges cover laser film output, screen reclaim labor and chemicals, emulsion, screen burn labor, washout labor, screen tape, and actual press registration per ink color per print location.

Setup charges are handled differently by different companies. Some companies will have apparently low print prices to catch your attention but will slip in exorbitantly high set up, screen, and art charges. Other shops will claim "no set up fees" to get peak your interest while inflating their print prices to make up for it. We believe that both of these approaches are somewhat deceptive. We choose instead to be straightforward about our printing and set up charges so there are no hidden fees or inflated prices while at the same time keeping your ordering experience as clear and easy to understand as possible.

Metallic Inks

These inks contain small reflective particles that give the effect of sparkly metal. Because of the metallic solids in the ink, these inks provide the best results when printing low-detail images. We stock metallic gold and metallic silver and can custom mix any other color you might need.
Metallic ink is often confused with foil application, which gives a more shiny mirror finish.

Discharge Printing

Discharge printing is a unique screen printing process. Simply put, this ink "bleaches" the printed image area of a garment, leaving behind the natural color of the shirt. This works well on most 100% cotton garments, and is desireable because of the absolute permanance and the "no hand" feel of the print. Discharge ink is water based, requiring specialized emulsion, and has a very short shelf life.

Foil Application

Foil is applied to a finished printed garment using a thermal heat press. The immediate result is a very shiny, mirror finish. Although the foil is durable, you should expect the gloss to fade slightly over repeated washings. We recommend washing all screen printed garments inside-out and hang drying them. To use foil on your order, you need to start with at least a one color print - a second ink color can be added if desired. It is recommended that you select a color similar to that of the foil so that when it eventually does begin to wear off, the ink showing through will not be as noticable (for example, underbase silver foil with metallic silver ink). While we only stock gold and silver, our foil is available in many different colors. Add 3 business days to turn around for custom foil colors.

-Applying foil to a 1-color design: $1 per print
-Applying foil to design with an additional color showing: $1.50 per print

Art Design and Preparation

Final print quality very much depends on how the art is prepared. We rarely get art from our customers that is press ready, and we don't expect it. That is why we include an hour of free art prep with every screen printing order.

CVL's 2008 rate for graphic design services is $40 per hour, billable by half-hour increments. Please contact us with all the details for an estimate.

The first hour of art creation / preparation is free
$20 per 1/2 hour after that

Press ready art:

Press ready art requires no graphic design work on our end. To qualify, your art must meet the following requirements:

1. Must be vectors
2. Must be color separated into one of the following formats: .eps, .ai, .psd, .pdf
3. any fonts used must be either attached or the text must be converted to outlines.

Printing on Dark

Since screen printing inks are not completely opaque, an underbase layer of ink (usually white) is necessary to achieve a bright, vibrant, color-true print on many colored shirts. For example, a yellow print on a red t-shirt will appear orange without an underbase.

For this reason, screen prints on dark colored garments are priced differently. Please consult the "Printing on Dark" price list when pricing prints on dark garments.

4-Color Process Printing

This is a specialized screen printing process that produces full color CMYK prints. A full color image is separated into four color channels (cyan, magenta, yellow, and black) and burned onto four separate screens. These screens are then printed using special transparent process inks that mix on the shirt to produce impressive full color prints.

-Works best on white or light colored garments
-Spot colors should be added for large solid areas or color-critical shades

Fluorescent Inks

Fluorescent "day glow" inks are great when you're going for maximum visibility. The brighter-than-bright pigments are more expensive that those used in regular colors. We carry a couple of stock fluorescent colors, while other colors are custom mix orders.

Ink Color Changes

A color change involves cleaning the ink out of a screen and putting a different color in rather than producing a separate screen. For example, if you wanted half of your shirts to have a kelly green print and the other half to have the same print but with orange ink you would pay fifteen dollars for a color change rather than twenty dollars for a separate screen.

+$15 per ink color per print location

Custom Ink Mixing

Customers sometimes require specific ink colors that are not in our stock selection. For example, the Ohio State University has mandated that its logo be printed in PMS 200 red and PMS 429 gray.

CVL Ink will mix custom colors of ink if provided with a physical swatch (a printed example of the color) or a PMS (Pantone Matching System) number.

Custom ink mixing fee: $25.00 per color
